Sanders, an independent who often aligns with Democrats, has penned a letter exclusively for "Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan," urging Democratic leaders to address the issue.
The crux of the matter lies in the unlimited funds super PACs can raise for candidates, while also being barred from direct coordination with them. This dynamic has led to a disturbing trend where corporate-backed super PACs have already spent a staggering $517 million in the 2026 midterm election cycle. Sanders' letter specifically targets Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, and Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin, highlighting the need for action.
One of the most striking examples of super PAC influence is the Michigan Senate race, where Democratic candidate Haley Stevens received over $50 million in donations from outside organizations, including $30 million from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). Sanders points out that AIPAC, despite its initial support for Stevens, is now reportedly planning to back Republican Mike Rogers in the general election. This shift in allegiance underscores the real issue: these special interests are not aligned with the Democratic Party's values or its voters.
Sanders' solution is threefold. He advocates for a constitutional amendment to repeal Citizens United, a Supreme Court ruling that allows unlimited independent spending by outside groups. He also proposes legislation for public funding of elections and, most urgently, a prohibition on super PAC participation in Democratic primaries. In his letter, Sanders writes, "It is absurd that they spend tens of millions of dollars to try to determine who the Democratic nominee is and, if they fail, then proceed to support the Republican candidate in the general election.
