Standard

The recent Pro Tour Secrets of Strixhaven saw a shift towards Landfall decks, with both Mono-Green and Selesnya variants performing exceptionally well. This evolution is fascinating, as it follows a disappointing showing for Nature's Rhythm Badgermole Cub decks earlier this year.
The story of Standard in 2026 is one of constant change. We've seen decks rise and fall, with new strategies emerging each week. The current top contenders, Izzet Prowess and Badgermole Cub decks, create a fast-paced environment where early interaction is key. However, there are decks that can thrive within this context, and we're seeing signs of unexplored strategies that can stand up to these powerhouses.
One thing that immediately stands out to me is the speed of Standard. It's faster than we'd like, and this has led to some interesting deck developments. White-blue creature strategies, for example, have found success by embracing this speed with decks like Azorius Tempo and Momo, Friendly Flier. These decks are a testament to the format's adaptability and the players' creativity.
Despite the evolving metagame, we've decided to make no changes to the Standard banned list for now. We want to give the format more time to breathe and see how these new strategies develop. Pioneer
Pioneer is in a tricky spot right now. While the metagame is diverse with a range of strategies, competitive play has seen a decline in diversity over the past few months. Izzet decks, bolstered by the Lessons package and Flow State, have grown in popularity, and we want to ensure a healthier metagame.
Cori-Steel Cutter, a powerful card in Izzet decks, is the target of our ban this update. This card has compressed games and provided too much resilience, leaving other decks with limited breathing room. By removing Cutter, we aim to bring the power level of Izzet decks down to a more manageable level and create space for counterplay.
I believe this ban will have a positive impact on Pioneer, allowing for a more diverse and interactive metagame. We want to see a range of strategies thrive, and this change should help achieve that goal.
Modern
Modern has been a lot of fun lately, with a variety of decks finding success at the top of the metagame. However, we've identified a few issues that need addressing. Boros Energy, a consistent top performer, has been climbing in metagame share, and we want to ensure the format remains diverse and enjoyable.
Phlage, Titan of Fire's Fury, is the card we've chosen to ban. This card, in combination with Arena of Glory, has created an oppressive combo that has pushed out other aggro and midrange decks. By removing Phlage, we aim to hit the strongest decks in the format while preserving the synergies that make Arena of Glory an exciting card.
Additionally, we're banning Lotus Field in Amulet Titan decks. This card adds significant power to the deck, allowing for infinite mana and channeling of key cards. We want to de-power this deck while still keeping it viable, as we don't want to outright kill an iconic archetype.
On the unbanning front, we're bringing back Violent Outburst and Umezawa's Jitte. Violent Outburst was banned in a different Modern meta, and with the recent shake-up of the format and the addition of powerful hate cards, we believe it's time to give this deck a chance again. Umezawa's Jitte, a beloved card in Legacy and Cube, has finally found its way back into Modern. We hope this unban will inspire players to explore combat-oriented decks and bring new life to Stoneforge Mystic strategies.
Legacy
Legacy is looking good overall, with new cards and decks popping up regularly. However, we've identified an issue with Oops, All Spells!, a combo deck that has been consistently present in the metagame. This deck, while novel and fun for some, has become too repetitive and is throttling the reasonable decks that can be played in Legacy.
To address this, we're banning Undercity Informer while keeping Balustrade Spy legal. Our goal is to preserve the deck but make it an opt-in experience rather than a weekly staple. We want to ensure Legacy remains a format that rewards long-term fandom and mastery, and this change should help achieve that vision.
We're also keeping a close eye on Colorless Tron, which has been surging in the metagame. If it continues to perform well, we'll explore options to keep Legacy healthy and diverse.
Other Formats
Vintage remains in a great spot, with a healthy metagame and a diverse range of decks battling it out. Flow State, a recent addition, has given blue-based decks a powerful draw option, and we're excited to see how it settles into the format.
In Pauper, we're unbanning Bonder's Ornament to see how it impacts the format. This card was banned in a different era, and with the format speeding up, we believe it could help boost slower control decks. We'll be monitoring its impact and making a final decision in our August update.
Alchemy sees a ban on Sewer-veillance Cam, a common from Magic: The Gathering | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. This card, in combination with A-Vivi Ornitier, created an overly dominant deck. By banning Sewer-veillance Cam, we aim to maintain the health of the format while keeping A-Vivi Ornitier viable in other formats.
Finally, Historic, Timeless, and Brawl remain unchanged for now. We're excited to see the impact of the Mystical Archive cards in Timeless and the continued growth of deck diversity in Historic.
