Gianna Romero, the embodiment of Maryland pride, is set to represent her state at the Miss America competition in West Palm Beach, Florida. Her journey, which began three years ago, has been a transformative one, both personally and professionally.
Romero, a 21-year-old Stevenson University student, has used her platform as Miss Maryland to create a powerful initiative called the Bloom Initiative. This initiative, inspired by her own experiences, focuses on healthy relationship education and advocacy, a topic she feels passionately about.
"The Bloom Initiative stems from my own journey of surviving an abusive relationship," Romero shared. "I realized the importance of educating young people about healthy relationships and the signs of abuse. It's a topic that needs to be addressed in schools to prevent such situations."
Her mission is to reach students across all 23 counties in Maryland, from elementary to college level, ensuring they have the resources to build healthy relationships. Romero believes in the power of early education, starting with simple concepts like kindness and respect, and gradually introducing more complex topics as students grow older.
"I want to empower young people to recognize the signs of an unhealthy relationship and know that they are not alone. There are resources available when they are ready to seek help," she added.
Romero's own turning point came when she realized her partner's lack of respect for her. This realization led her back to her love of service and a newfound purpose.
"Maryland is a state full of resilient and amazing people," Romero said. "I want to give back and empower others to recognize their worth and find their purpose too."
As she prepares for the Miss America competition, Romero's focus remains on her community service and the impact she can make. Her journey is a testament to the power of personal growth and the ability to turn adversity into a force for good.
"I'm excited to represent Maryland and showcase the strength and resilience of our state," she concluded. "It's an honor to be a part of this competition and to use my platform for such an important cause."
